Redistricting

Maps updated September 28, 2012

At the regular meeting of the JCS Board of Education in June, the board approved the redistricting plan shown in the maps below. The redistricting plan for elementary schools will go into effect the fall of 2013 while the plan for secondary schools will start in the fall of 2014.

The board of education started the redistricting project in October of 2009 when the committee assigned with the task held its first meeting. The board tasked the committee to develop a plan that had the following goal.

To produce schools which:

  • Are similar size
  • Are similar demographic
  • Produce efficient transportation
  • Allow student proximity to their school

The committee held regular meetings, and asked for community input through public forums and written suggestions. Throughout this time the committee updated the board on their progress and potential plans at regular board meetings.

In 2013 Jessamine County Schools will have 6 elementary schools and each will have between 16.2% and 17.0% of the district elementary enrollment.

The East track will have 51% of our enrollment and consist of Brookside Elementary, Warner Elementary, the new elementary school currently being constructed, East Jessamine Middle School and East Jessamine High School.

The West track will have 49% of our enrollment and consist of Nicholasville Elementary, Rosenwald-Dunbar Elementary, Wilmore Elementary, West Jessamine Middle School and West Jessamine High School.

The following is the “Grandfather Clause” for the redistricting plan.

  1. These procedures apply only to those students for whom the redistricting would require a change of schools.
  2. All students are encouraged to attend the school in their attendance area.
  3. Elementary and middle school students in the exit levels (5th and 8th grades) will be afforded the option to be exempt from the redistricting changes and remain in their current school. Should students choose this option the parents will be responsible for the transportation of their child(ren) to and from school.
  4. All students who have previously attended a high school will be afforded the option to be exempt from the redistricting changes and remain at that school through their completion. Should students choose this option the parents will be responsible for the transportation of their child(ren) to and from school.
  5. Parents will have the option of keeping their children at a single school should one of the siblings qualify for an exemption. The following year however, all children must attend their assigned school.
  6. All other students are required to attend the school in their attendance area.
  7. Upon entry into the next level (middle school or high school), students who were exempted in provision #3 will be required to enroll in the school in their attendance area.
  8. These procedures do not preclude the use of the regular “Out of Attendance Area Change Form” requests. Such requests will take precedent.
